Slovak Jews in Theresienstadt, Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen, 1944/1945

The dissertation focuses on the fates of some 5 000 men, women and children of mostly Jewish descent who were deported by German Nazi authorities from the occupied Slovak State into the Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück, Bergen-Belsen and Theresienstadt concentration camps in the period ranging from November 1944 to the end of March 1945. The main objectives of the dissertation include the establishment of the number and identity of the deportees, the circumstances of their arrest, deportation, imprisonment and liberation as well as the causes of survival, or death, of the victims of racial persecution during the German occupation of Slovakia. Based on a comparative and content analysis of the available archival sources, oral and written testimonies by survivors and, to a limited extent, of secondary literature, the writer attempts to explain the conduct of the perpetrators and victims as well as the general historical context of the deportation and imprisonment of Slovak Jews by the Nazi regime. The picture of concentration camps in Czech prose of the 50/s

This master's thesis The picture of concentration camps in Czech prose of the 50's analyses selected literary works from 1950᾿s. These works are presented by different author's approaches from presented reality. First part of this work focuses on concept of "Holocaust" and on possibility of its verb representation as well. Another part of thesis deals with development of "literature with topic of Holocaust" from 1945 to contemporary times. The emphasis is placed to the texts from 1950᾿s and 1960᾿s that had formed reader's memory. Next chapter observe a permeation and reciprocal influencing of historical and fictional discourse. The picture of life in Nazi concentration camps, the author's character creation as well as representation of Jewishness are analyzed in these works: A Box of Lives by Norbert Frýd, Osm odtamtud by E. The work called Herman Joseph Tyl offers a total lack on the life of this important religious figure, the abbot of one of the oldest Norbertine monastery founded by Czech nobleman blessed Hroznata in Teplá, which experienced the suffering of two totalitarian regimes of the 20th century: Nazis in concentration camps and prisons in Communist labor and uranium camps, as well as various interventions in the persecution of his life in the form of withdrawal of government approval. The work is given to the period of his life, which has so far lacked the processing. This is particularly Tylova childhood, adolescence, studies and life after 1958, when he worked as a warehouseman at Cakovském collective farm and returned to the priesthood, which he re-intervention prevented Communist totalitarian power by removing state approval, to the end of his life again to priesthood returned and was even elected abbot of the monastery Tepla. The work also offers a historical and critical evaluation of the data known from the Tyl autobiography affecting in particular the period from his arrest by the Gestapo in 1942 until his release from prison and their communist completion in the light sources.
